Articles: il, lo, la, i, gli, le, un, una

Italian articles change with gender, number and the first sound of the next word: il libro, lo zaino, la casa, l'amico.

Masculine: il (il cane), lo before s + consonant, z, gn (lo studente), l' before a vowel. Plural: i and gli.

Feminine: la, l' before a vowel, plural le.

A / an: un (masculine), uno (like lo), una (feminine), un' before a feminine vowel.

Pattern: article + noun
