Nicht and kein: saying "not" and "no"

Use kein before a noun that would have ein or no article (Ich habe kein Auto). Use nicht for everything else (Ich komme nicht).

Kein follows ein: kein (masculine and neuter), keine (feminine and plural).

Nicht usually goes near the end of the sentence or before the word it negates: Das ist nicht gut.

Quick test: if you could say "a" or "any" in English, use kein.

Pattern: kein + Nomen / nicht + ...
